Protecting your Vehicle
It is no secret that the value of platinum has gone up. In fact it is very hard to not know this given that advertisements on television, radio, the internet and in news papers are beckoning people to sell their old junk cars and catalytic converters to make a quick buck or two. Sadly an unforeseen problem this has created is that many less than honest people have taken to theft of not just entire vehicles, but of various parts on the vehicle. This rash of thefts and vandalism is probably going to continue for quite some time and many people are wondering what they can do to protect their vehicles.
The truth of the matter is that if someone is determined to steal parts of your car or the entire vehicle they will. However, most thefts are crimes of opportunity, so someone who takes precautions reduces the chance of being a victim of this crime substantially. With everything going on currently, it makes sense to try and limit any chance you have for loss. Taking a few simple precautions will not only limit the opportunity for other people, but also give you a sense of peace of mind as well.
The most obvious way to protect your car is to store it in a garage whenever you are not using it. First a garage hides the care from view. When someone can not see your car they are less likely to think of it as a potential target. Next a garage means the thief needs to enter in order to get the platinum rich catalytic converter. Because most thieves operate on an idea of maximum gain for minimum risk, they are less likely to actually enter the garage. Finally most garages have means by which they can be locked and secured from the outside. While a determine thief can get past locks, one who is really about opportunity is unlikely too put that much work just to get into a garage to swipe the catalytic converter.
If you don’t have a garage there are still ways to protect your vehicle and its valuable platinum heavy catalytic converter. If at all possible park your car in a bright lit area. Since most of the people going after cars for their platinum content, they are unlikely to take the extra risk of going after a car that is in a well lit area. If you don’t have a well let area, you might want to think about investing in a motion triggered light. Not only does a motion sensor have a chance of scaring off a would be thief, it can also serve as an alarm from inside the house. There is a chance that a wandering cat or stray dog can set it off and while this might be annoying, it more than makes up for it by increasing your security.
Another good idea is too park your car in an area you can easily observe it. If you have large front windows, think about parking your car in view. If you spend a lot of time in the back of your home, you might want to consider parking the care there. This is not as effective as other means of protecting the car and the platinum the thieves are after, but it is a way you can keep tabs while going about your daily life.
Perhaps the single most important thing you can do to protect you car is get a car alarm. However, just getting an alarm is not enough. While it may scare off a thief, many professional thieves know that no one will bother checking the alarm. At most, they figure people will shut the alarm off from inside the home. Sure car alarms go off a little too often, but given the rash of catalytic converter thefts happening all over the country it is more than worth taking the time to check a car alarm set off. Yes some times it will be a false alarm but that one time that it is a real reason you will be happy you did.
In the end there is no way to guarantee the safety of your car. Unfortunately there are many parts on a car high in platinum content that many people know are valuable and know how to get too. Yet not doing anything is almost like inviting someone too go ahead and take what they want from your vehicle. It might take a little time, maybe a little extra thought and attention to details are called for. Yet, your car is probably not just important but necessary to the way you conduct your life. Its worth taking the time too prepare precautions and give you a bit more peace of mind.
